Earbuds for Clear Calls: Mics, ENC and What Actually Helps

CallsEarbudsENC3 min read

Earbuds that sound great for music can still make you sound distant or noisy on calls. How clear you sound depends on the microphones, the processing, the fit, and even your phone and network. Here is what actually makes a difference.

Why calls are harder than music

  • Distance: earbud mics sit far from your mouth compared with a headset boom mic, so they also pick up traffic, wind and nearby voices.
  • Bluetooth call mode: calls use Bluetooth's hands-free mode, which carries voice at a lower quality than music streaming. This is also why music can sound flat when your earbud mic is active during a laptop meeting.
  • A long chain: your voice passes through the earbuds' processing, Bluetooth, your phone, the network or calling app, and finally the other person's device. A weak link anywhere affects quality.

The features that help

Multiple microphones

With two or more mics, earbuds can use beamforming, which focuses pickup towards your mouth and reduces sound from other directions. More mics give the processing more information, but placement and tuning matter just as much.

Call noise reduction (ENC)

Environmental noise cancellation filters background noise out of your mic signal, so the other person hears more of you and less of the street. Brands use their own names for it, such as AI noise reduction. Very aggressive processing can make a voice sound slightly robotic in loud places, so results vary between models.

Fit and hearing yourself

A good seal lets you hear the caller without turning the volume up. Some earbuds also let you hear your own voice during calls, often called sidetone or a hear-through option, which stops you from talking too loudly.

Mono mode

On models that support it, using a single earbud keeps one ear open, which is handy for quick calls on the move.

Not every feature helps both sides of the call. This table shows which helps whom.

Which features help on calls
Feature What it does Helps the caller hear you Helps you hear the caller
Multiple mics (beamforming) Focuses on your voice Yes No
ENC or call noise reduction Filters background noise from your mic Yes No
ANC Reduces the noise you hear Not directly Yes
Good fit and seal Blocks outside noise passively No Yes
Sidetone or hear-through Lets you hear your own voice Indirectly, as you speak at a natural level Partly

Examples from the catalogue

  • The Jabra Elite 4 lists 4-microphone technology for clear calls, a mono mode for using either earbud on its own, and Bluetooth Multipoint for two devices.
  • The realme Buds Air 5 list 6-mic noise cancellation for calls alongside 50dB ANC.

Mic counts are manufacturer specifications. They are a useful clue, but real call quality also depends on processing, fit and your surroundings.

Tips for clearer calls

  1. Install the brand's app and keep the firmware updated.
  2. Keep the mic openings clean using a soft, dry brush. Never poke them with pins.
  3. In wind, turn your face away from it or shield the earbud with your hand.
  4. On a laptop, update the Bluetooth drivers and select the earbuds as both the microphone and speaker in your meeting app.
  5. Before an important call, test with a voice note or a call to a friend from a noisy place.

Quick answers

Does ANC make me sound clearer to the other person?

Not directly. ANC reduces the noise you hear. How you sound depends on the mics and the call noise reduction.

Why do I sound worse on laptop calls than on my phone?

The laptop's Bluetooth hardware, drivers and calling app all play a part, and the hands-free mode has limited audio quality. Updating the drivers and the app often helps.

Is a 6-mic earbud always better than a 4-mic one?

No. Placement and processing matter as much as the count, so treat it as one factor among several.

Are neckbands better for calls?

On many neckbands the mic sits on the band or an in-line remote, closer to your mouth, which can help. Processing still makes a big difference.
