A smartwatch can show notifications, track activity, take calls on your wrist and run for days on a charge, but models differ a lot in display, GPS, battery and app support. This checklist will help you choose, with Indian conditions such as bright sun, heat and the monsoon in mind.
Check phone compatibility first
Most fitness smartwatches work with both Android phones and iPhones through the brand's companion app, but some features are limited to one platform. Quick replies to notifications, for instance, are often Android-only. Check the product page and the app listing for your phone before you buy.
Display: type, size and brightness
- AMOLED screens show deep blacks and rich colours, and suit always-on display (AOD) modes. LCD screens can be bright and clear, but blacks look greyer.
- Brightness is quoted in nits. A higher peak figure helps in strong sunlight, though it is a manufacturer figure and real visibility also depends on reflections and viewing angle.
- Size: large screens, such as the common 1.96-inch size, are easier to read but sit bigger on a slim wrist.
- Always-on display is convenient but uses more battery.
The Fastrack Astor FS2 Pro, for example, lists a 1.96-inch Super AMOLED screen with 1000 nits brightness, Always-On Display and 330 PPI in a metal body, along with Bluetooth calling, quick reply on Android, IP68 water resistance and up to 5 days of battery life.
Bluetooth calling
A calling smartwatch has its own mic and speaker, so you can answer or make calls from your wrist. The call still goes through your phone's SIM over Bluetooth, so the phone needs to be connected and within range. It is handy when your phone is charging or in a bag, but a small speaker can be hard to hear in traffic, and calling uses extra battery.
GPS: built in or not
Built-in GPS lets the watch map your route, distance and pace on outdoor runs and rides without carrying your phone. Watches without it estimate distance from your steps or, on some models, use your phone's GPS through the app. That is fine for daily activity but less precise for runs.
- The Redmi Watch 5 Lite lists in-built GPS with five satellite systems (GPS, Galileo, GLONASS, BeiDou and QZSS), a 1.96-inch AMOLED display, Bluetooth calling with dual-mic AI noise reduction and 5 ATM water resistance.
- The Noise Pulse 4 Max is listed without GPS, but offers a 1.96-inch AMOLED display with AOD, True Sync Bluetooth calling and the Noise Fit app.
Health and fitness tracking
Most smartwatches track steps, heart rate, sleep and blood oxygen (SpO2), and many add stress or breathing estimates. These readings are for general wellness and fitness tracking, not medical diagnosis. Accuracy varies with fit, skin, movement and the activity, so look at trends over time rather than single readings, and rely on a proper medical device and a doctor's advice for any health decision.
Long lists of sports modes look impressive, but what matters is how well the watch tracks the few activities you actually do.
Battery life
Battery claims depend on how you use the watch. Always-on display, Bluetooth calling, GPS workouts and continuous health monitoring all shorten it. The Redmi Watch 5 Lite listing shows how much: up to 18 days of typical use, 12 days of heavy use and 7 days with Always-On Display. Many watches use a dedicated magnetic charger, so keep it safe.
Water resistance
IP67 and IP68 ratings mean protection against dust and immersion under test conditions, but IP68 alone does not guarantee a watch is meant for swimming. A 5 ATM rating is more commonly specified for swimming in shallow water. Whatever the rating, avoid hot showers and saunas, and check the manual before you swim.
Quick checklist
| Feature | Why it matters | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Display | Readability outdoors | AMOLED or LCD, size, peak brightness, AOD |
| Calling | Calls without taking out your phone | Mic and speaker, battery life with calling |
| GPS | Route tracking without your phone | Built-in GPS or none |
| Battery | How often you charge | Days in typical use versus with AOD or calls |
| Water resistance | Rain, sweat, swimming | IP or ATM rating and the manual's swimming advice |
| App | Where your data and settings live | Android and iOS support, features per platform |
Quick answers
Can a Bluetooth calling smartwatch work without my phone?
Not for calls. Bluetooth calling watches route calls through your phone, so it needs to be nearby and connected. Watches with their own SIM or eSIM are a different category.
Are smartwatch SpO2 and heart rate readings accurate?
They are useful estimates for general wellness, not medical measurements. Wearing the watch snugly helps, and you should consult a doctor about any health concern.
Can I swim with a 5 ATM watch?
Many brands rate 5 ATM watches for swimming in a pool or shallow water, but not for diving, high-speed water sports, hot water or saunas. Always follow your model's manual.
Will a smartwatch work with my iPhone?
Most fitness smartwatches support iPhones through their app, but some features, such as quick replies, may be Android-only. Check the product page before buying.
