Ear tips are small, but they decide how your earbuds sound, how well noise cancellation works and whether the earbuds stay put. Most in-ear earbuds come with tips in more than one size, and finding the right fit takes only a few minutes.
Why the right size matters
- Sound: a good seal keeps the bass in. A loose tip makes music sound thin.
- Noise control: active noise cancellation and passive isolation both work best with a proper seal.
- Comfort: tips that are too large cause pressure or soreness, while tips that are too small slip out.
- Stability: the right size keeps earbuds in place when you walk, talk or work out.
How to find your size
- Start with the tips already fitted, usually the medium size.
- Insert each earbud with a slight twist, gently pulling the top of your ear up and back to open the ear canal.
- Play a song with steady bass. Press gently on the earbud: if the bass suddenly sounds fuller, the seal isn't complete, so try the next size up.
- Shake your head, talk and open your mouth wide. The earbuds shouldn't loosen.
- Wear them for 20 to 30 minutes. If you feel pressure or soreness, try the next size down.
- Test each ear on its own, because many people need a different size in each ear.
Built-in fit tests
Some earbuds can check the seal for you. With the Apple AirPods Pro (2nd generation) with MagSafe Case (USB-C) in your ears and connected, open Settings on your iPhone, tap your AirPods' name and choose Ear Tip Fit Test. Some other brands offer a similar test in their app, so check yours.
How to change ear tips
- Pinch the tip at its base, where it meets the earbud, rather than pulling the thin outer edge.
- Twist gently and pull it off the nozzle.
- Line up the new tip with the nozzle and push until it sits fully in place. Some tips click on.
- Give it a gentle tug to make sure it is secure, so it doesn't stay in your ear when you take the earbud out.
When to replace ear tips
- The silicone is torn, stretched or no longer holds its shape.
- Foam tips stay flat and don't expand to fill your ear.
- The fit has become loose even though it used to feel right.
Clean silicone tips regularly with plain water and let them dry fully before refitting them.
Thinking about third-party tips?
Aftermarket silicone or memory-foam tips can improve comfort, but check that they match your earbuds' nozzle size, that the case lid still closes and that the earbuds still sit on the charging contacts. Taller tips can stop earbuds from seating properly in the case.
Earbuds with a different kind of fit
Not every earbud uses a sealing tip. Open-type designs such as the Samsung Galaxy Buds 3 rest in the ear without one, so the fit depends on the shape of your ear. For in-ear models, choosing the right size makes a real difference; the Skullcandy Sesh ANC listing, for example, advises choosing the ear gel tip size that fits your ears.
Quick answers
Should I use the same tip size in both ears?
Not necessarily. Ears often differ slightly, so choose the size that seals and feels comfortable in each ear.
Can the wrong tip size affect noise cancellation?
Yes. Noise cancellation works best with a good seal. A loose tip lets outside noise leak in and also reduces bass.
How do I clean ear tips?
Remove silicone tips and rinse them with plain water, then dry them completely before refitting. Wipe foam tips gently instead of soaking them, and follow your brand's care instructions.
